WHCR 90.3 FM the Voice of Harlem and now the world.
Today, after a long day of productive meetings working on the marketing of crowdsource language translation, internal and external business development, John Roberts of comixology lured me to Live Bait, a place to eat by his office. I didn’t think I had time, but after some arm twisting, found myself chugging catfish on my way to the last meetup of the day.
I had to run to Harlem to deliver some raw footage and a couple of edited film clips of our recent launch to Mr. Bambaataa.
A coworker from back in the Sumaato days met me and we caught a ride to the radio station where Bam spins – WHCR 90.3 FM.
Having a few encounters with the legend and father of hip-hop, certainly we’d expect his hospitality and outward demonstration of Universal Zulu love and respect – but then again one should never assume to know the workings of things so much bigger than yourself. Anyway… Afrika said we could sit in for a bit of the show, eagerly we sat down in the seats, and had a chance to watch him spin…better yet, listen to him spin. Really listen…no crowds, no one talking, nothing to distract from the humming balance of 80s punk, slipping into 808 steps to top 40, to rock, to funk, to soul, to the twang of guitars, mixed with lyrics of positivity. I’m not telling you anything that don’t know about Bam’s eclectic swoon. Yeah, for brief minutes crescendo colors played in tune and my life experience of hip hop summed itself up while my eyes closed.
At the end of the set, with a warm smile and courteousness to assure me that what we’re doing is for “everyone”, he motioned for me to grab the mic, and he turned the show over to a brief interview about Mojofiti.
We spoke from the pulpit of Harlem about the progress of breaking down language barriers and spread the knowledge that the solutions exist now….to everyone listening. More than another chance to tell the people about our mission, it was a lesson and revelation, that we’re doing work that will inspire you, change the world around you and let anyone in any language let you know that it’s okay now, to have PEACE, UNITY, LOVE and a little fun.
